i know i have a bona fide belly when there's perceivable mass moving around as i tilt my body from side to side.  i discovered that today after dinner.  mmm...sex-yyyy.

on a different note, i've been happily lucky with the live music i've gotten to check out lately.  last night was howe gelb, who has been reviewed as "too indie to be indie."  his approach to music making--crossing genre borders, courageously experimenting with his ideas, and following his intuition--embodies the spirt of music making.  coming from a classically trained background where many people are very one-track minded, i find his music refreshing and his approach inspirational.  at one especially rock-out moment, it was surreal to see his full gospel choir occupying the same stage, swaying and clapping to screaming electric guitars and blasting drums.  and I'm still amazed by the huge range of sounds and uses he got out of a guitar.  he sounded like a full band with drums and bass all by himself with a guitar.  and his sexy voice.  i also relished his use of words.  playing for us was a "severe pleasure" for him -- one of my favorites.  after picking up a guitar and seeing that the stand came stuck to it, he put the guitar on stubbornly (causing the stand to eventually fall from the guitar) and commented, "a man who's attached to his guitar stand can't stand up for himself."  I don't remember having laughed so hard and so often at a concert before.  i also need to remember the fabulous lemonade i got at the venue: juice from half of a freshly squeezed lemon, toroni(?) syrup, club soda.  it was deliciously perfect after too much good southern barbeque and a muggy, 90-degree day.  not bad for a free concert i won through time out chicago after a careless entry.

tonight was my third time going to see these guys in concert within the past 3 or 4 months and i'm still not sick of them!  it's so refreshing to see great showmanship on top of genuine energy, enthusiasm, and technical prowess.  their timing, musically and presentation-wise, is perfect, down to little motions to enhance the lyrics or when the banjo player struck the downbeat to punctuate the lead singer's joke.  plus their fiddle and mandolin players have me transfixed in my seat whenever they play.  it's like being struck by lightning.  i can't move or breathe, for fear of missing any 64th note that cascades out of their instruments.  they all seem to genuinely have a blast on stage with each other and doing what they do--such a perfect and charmed way to earn a living.

raw and visceral--it resonates down to my core.  love it.  her beats (ooph, that looked like "her breasts" when i read it quickly.  i'm not qualified to comment on things i've never seen.) rudely awakened an urge to go clubbing, a desire that usually crops up when the weather gets warmer.

going to experience these guys perform and the concert itself sparked my crazy week of going out on weeknights.  talk about an interesting combo of mellow yet mysteriously infectious energy that made the audience unable to stay still, even on a monday night!
